Aged garlic helps lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients

07 May 2013

One study showed 50 people with treated but uncontrolled high blood pressure took 4 capsules of aged garlic extract or a placebo daily for 12 weeks in addition to their existing antihypertensive medication. It appears that compared with those taking the placebo, the group taking the garlic had a 10mmHg reduction in their systolic blood pressure over the 3 month treatment period.

One of the ways this is possible is that garlic promotes vasodilation, or relaxing of the artery walls, so blood can flow freely without constriction. Garlic also stops inflammation from occurring keeping the arteriole walls nice and supple from oxidative stress. Last, but not least, it acts as a blood thinner allowing adequate flow preventing resistance (pressure).

Lead researcher Dr. Karin Ried said that “… there is a large proportion of people out there who are on medication and some people are on four different types but they still have high blood pressure, it is uncontrolled. … when we gave them this garlic supplement we were able on average to reduce their blood pressure under the hypertension threshold”.
